I often get questions about the difference between film and digital, how the pictures look when shot on film and why I still continue to shoot weddings on film in a digital world. For that reason I've put together this portfolio of film images shot at weddings in my adopted home of Spain, across Europe and beyond.
For me film immediately evokes a sense of nostalgia and a feeling the the photograph is already a memory. My 'why' in photography and weddings, the reason I'm drawn to documenting the most special days of people's lives, is all about creating a record of these key moments in life. Records that will be enjoyed more and more with the passing of the years, be handed down through families and, ultimately, be a way to remember people by.
Documenting weddings on film really enhances this feeling of nostalgia, of timelessness. The colour and texture of film feels immediately atemporal. Unlike many digital editing styles, the look of film will never go out of fashion. Just like a painter chooses their paints and canvases to best tell the story they're trying to communicate, so the soft, dreaminess of film perfectly complements the hazy beauty of your love story. And is a perfect reminder of that one amazing day you gathered with your loved ones to forget everything and just celebrate the joyfulness of life, and the privilege it is to share it.
As David Alan Harvey once famously said: “Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.” For me, photographing weddings on film does just this, it tells the story of what the wedding day really feels like, emotional, colourful, and just that bit more beautiful than real life.
